The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 was overturned in May 2018, making sports betting legal on a federal level. Not all states have legal online football betting yet, but we’ve compiled this comprehensive guide so you can find out where you can bet and what to expect in the future.
In this guide, we’ll take you through which states have legal betting and which states are on the cusp of legalizing online football betting on a state level. In addition, we’ll lay out a few online sports betting websites and give you a feel for promotions, rewards programs, and more. And if you’re new to the world of online football betting, we’ll give you the info you need to bet with the pros.
Some online sportsbooks offering football betting are online-only, meaning they’re not backed by a casino. In other cases, you can bet online from your favorite app, then use rewards points earned online for discounted or comped meals, hotel stays, and more.
There are states that may have legal football betting, but no operators in place to provide online football betting to their customers. Below is a full rundown on what to expect for the future of online betting in these states. In addition, we’ve detailed which states have fully launched their online betting platforms, a few choice sites to visit, rewards programs, and more!
New Jersey has long been a fantastic destination for anyone looking to place bets, and online football betting is alive and well! As long as you’re in New Jersey and 21+, you can install a number of apps to bet on football right from your smartphone. We’ll detail a few of the best operators and apps later in the article.
There was no real struggle getting online football betting legalized in New Jersey, as the state already has a well-established framework for taking bets on live events. Plus, many of the casinos in New Jersey are nationwide chains offering online football betting and in-person sportsbooks all over the country, so you can be sure their apps are tried-and-true.
After the May 2018 federal decision to overturn PASPA, New Jersey legalized sports betting in June, with legal bets being placed three days later. Harrah’s (a Caesars property) and Resorts Casino are among the most popular online football betting apps, and we’ll detail them a bit more below.
Pennsylvania was the fourth state to legalize online football betting, and its first sports bets were placed in November of 2018. It took until May 2019 for the first PA online football betting app to be released, and we expect other operators to have similarly slow release times. Still, the PA-based version of playSugarHouse.com is already up and running, so you can definitely get online in PA and bet right now!
The laws for legalized football betting in West Virginia are voted for and in place. West Virginia had a worthwhile NFL betting app with BetLucky. Unfortunately, a series of contract disputes with Mionmi, the main provider of mobile betting services in West Virginia, caused BetLucky and two other sportsbooks to shutter their operations completely.
On the positive side, DraftKings was recently given the go-ahead to offer an online football betting app in West Virginia! It’s not live yet, but we’ll give you the full details as soon as the DraftKings NFL betting app goes online in WV.
Senate Bill 17 is the brainchild of Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., and it has recently passed in the New York State Senate. Believing online NFL betting and other sports wagering to be a great job creator, the senator and assembly member J. Gary Pretlow drafted S 17, which has passed in one house (with amendments).
However, Governor Andrew Cuomo is well-known for being hesitant to sign a bill legalizing online football betting. It is unlikely that S17D (the most recent version) will be signed into law in 2019. It’s a good sign that online football betting in NY state is on the table, but we don’t expect it to be legalized for at least 2 years.
Rhode Island bettors are in luck because online football betting was signed into law by Gov. Gina Raimondo in March of 2019. However, it appears that no casinos or online-only operators have yet established an online NFL betting app in Rhode Island. So far, sportsbooks in RI have reported abysmal revenues without the ability to play from a smartphone.
The good news is you can bet on football in Mississippi! Over 20 locations in the Magnolia state are now offering legal football betting! The bad news is that there is no provision in the law for online football betting, and the most recent attempt to legalize online sports wagers didn’t see the light of day. We’re hoping that representatives and senators will keep pushing for online football betting in MS, but as of summer 2019, no changes are reported.
A no-brainer: of course Nevada would have one of the most active online sports wagering markets in the country. NV residents will have no problem getting online to bet on football right now!
Legal online football betting in New Mexico is complicated. On a state level, the New Mexico Lottery wants to be the only operator offering any kind of online betting. However, the state’s tribal compact fully allows for any type of Class III gaming.
Thus, the Santa Ana Star has already opened a sportsbook in NM in lieu of this understanding. Perhaps the tribal casinos will find a way to implement online football betting, but the future is uncertain.
Delaware has legalized online casinos and bets on harness racing from a web browser. However, NFL betting or betting on any type of live event other than harness racing is strictly limited to in-person sportsbooks locations throughout the state.
MT was the first state to legalize online football betting in 2019. The MT online sports betting market will follow a lottery system similar to what New Mexico hopes to implement, where the state lottery will be the sole operator of legalized bets.
Indiana has legalized online sports betting, but the law change does not take full effect until September 2019. For a short time, it was believed that online football betting would be legal by July 2019, but amendments to the law postponed it for two months.
Legislation signed into law in May of 2019 will allow for both in-person and online football betting in Iowa. This law is set to take effect in August, but there is a caveat: Iowa residents must first visit the sportsbook in person to verify their identity and create an online account. Most Iowa casinos are scrambling to create physical sportsbook locations to facilitate this before legal changes take effect later this year.
The opposite of Iowa, Tennessee has legalized only online football betting and will have no physical locations to place bets. The bill became law in spring 2019, but the process for licensure is still being detailed, so there is no effective start date for online NFL betting in Tennessee. We expect sports betting to go live next year.
Of the aforementioned states, only Pennsylvania and New Jersey have fully-fledged online football betting apps that are live and playable right now. Here’s a rundown on a few of our favorites, with a special focus on promotions and rewards programs.

When you’re betting on NFL football and looking at the board, there are a few figures you need to identify. First off is the rotation number, a shorthand used by some sportsbooks to refer to a specific game. Not all sportsbooks use rotation numbers, but if they do, it’s usually the figure on the left.
Reading left to right, after the rotation number is usually the name of the away team. Then comes the point spread (or “spread”), moneyline (or “line”), and over/under (or “total”). These detail the specific odds for that team in that match. The following line on the board will show the home team by rotation number, spread, and line.
The point spread (or “spread) is a +/- number detailing the expected difference in the total points scored. For example, if the Broncos are listed at +20.5 against the Seahawks at -20.5, the Hawks are favored to win by twenty points. You will be paid out for a Broncs bet if they win, or if they lose by less than 20 points.
The moneyline is a positive or negative number detailing the expected payout in $100 amounts. In the above example, if the Broncos/Seahawks money line was -300/+200 respectively, a $200 bet on the Hawks would only net you $100 in winnings, whereas a $100 bet on Denver could result in a $300 profit.
The over/under (or “total”) is simply the total number of points each team is expected to score. When you’re NFL betting online, this is usually between 35 and 47 points, give or take.
The first and most important tip for NFL sports betting is to be a fan! Follow your team and keep updated with the latest info. Also, try to get a good feeling for your favorite team or players’ strengths and weaknesses.
Secondly, and this is super important for NFL sports betting in particular: pay attention to the moneyline! The point spread is subject to change. However, a moneyline is a fixed set of odds and can be a great indicator of a favorite.
The last tip to keep in mind when betting on NFL football is a teaser. A teaser is a particularly versatile kind of bet. With it, you can actually move the point spread by up to 7 points. Use this to your advantage when taking a look at close spreads!
By Super Bowl LIV, we expect big changes in the world of online NFL football betting. We’ve mentioned which states should definitely have fully-fledged NFL sports betting online by the upcoming championship. So, make sure you’ve got the apps installed and the rewards programs linked to your online account come February! Some sites even have Live Betting so you can bet on the action in real-time!
Bet on your favorite NFL football games online from NJ, PA, and soon more states. An ever-growing list of promotions and live events are keeping NJ and PA players happy. Also, we expect that same celebrated service to come to at least five states in the coming months.
Betting on NFL football is simple and fun with many of the online football betting apps on the market. Just choose your game of choice, select the type of bet, and you’re on your way!
Using the above guide to online sports betting and your best judgment, make your picks and place your bets. And don’t forget to take advantage of promotions! PointsBet NJ, for example, offers two risk-free bets up to $1,000! What that means is you can place two wagers up to $500 and if you lose, you get cash back!
Remember, spending your hard-earned money on online football betting is not for everyone. If you’re a fan of the game and want to try NFL sports betting, we celebrate that! Just do so responsibly, take your time while reading the board, and set limits for yourself to keep things fun!
